Change, upheaval and unforeseen challenges are inevitable circumstances that hit a team or organization from time to time. The question is how resilient is the team to these impacts and what can we do to strengthen resilience and cohesion when the “storm hits”?

Our team development consultants have put together a checklist of 10 focus points that are important to keep in mind to build a strong team culture and strengthen resilience to handle disruption.

Clarify goals and direction
As far as possible, present the team with a way forward and a vision for the future on the other side of the disruption phase.

Be clear about roles and responsibilities
New tasks and challenges arise. Be precise and clear about who has what responsibilities. And cultivate a sense of ownership around these. Our workshop Team Effectiveness focuses on methods and tools to optimize teamwork, among other things.

Communicate clearly about the process
Change and upheaval means uncharted territory and new ways of doing things. Be honest and open about the process and be clear about the reasons why you are adjusting or changing directions.

Cultivate reciprocity and trust
Build respect for each other’s spaces. And create an environment where mutual respect and trust can grow.

Create shared engagement and commitment
Co-ownership! Get the team on board with the challenge and establish a sense of mutual commitment to each other and the journey ahead.

Cultivate diversity and inclusion
Celebrate and recognize your differences. The differences in your skills and personal approaches to the process should be cultivated as a strength, not a weakness. Show leadership and be constructive in conflict management
It is inevitable that frustrations and emotions come into play when change hits and uncertainty arises. Therefore, recognize that conflicts will be there and resolve them in a constructive and appreciative way. As a leader, it’s an important role to mediate and create constructiveness in the conflicts that arise during the change phases.

Create a balance between tasks and relationships
The resilient team manages to cultivate both achieving tasks while having the energy to nurture relationships… pure task efficiency is not enough to cultivate resilience. The emotional factors and EQ (Emotional Intelligence, ed. ) are absolutely necessary.

Be flexible
Be open to new ways of doing things continuously. Recognize that uncharted territory requires exploring new paths, even if they end blindly. Make flexibility a core value.

Make room for recovery
The resource-intensive upheavals also require the need to recover when the time is right. Therefore, cultivate the principle that every achievement is built on a foundation of human surplus. A good laugh

An active experience where the soundscape is characterized by the laughter of colleagues creates an atmosphere that you will look back on fondly one day. That’s the kind of moments we chase at HUMANIC. Both our team building concepts, party concepts, dinner games and minglegames. We’re not the ones who make you laugh, but we’re happy to help you laugh with each other. Sometimes you get a good laugh out of being put in a situation you’re not used to dealing with, you can laugh at yourself or with a colleague. But it’s a difficult balancing act, because everyone needs to be able to join in and feel comfortable with the situation. This is what we need to look at now.

Everyone should be able to join in

You’re going out and having fun. Have a good time! Often you reading this are the adventurous type. Loves fun, frolics and adrenaline-pumping experiences! That’s why you’ve been given the task of figuring out what to do at your next afterwork, team building or company party. But think about each individual in your group. There must be room for the introvert, the walking-impaired and the former top athlete. An activity that challenges everyone without making them feel unsafe or exposed can be extremely difficult to find. The larger the group, the harder it can be to get an overview. But if everyone has a role where they feel they contribute to the overall result, then you have embraced people. This means that everyone doesn’t have to be doing the same thing to be doing the same activity. Think of a soccer team; how different the goalkeeper and the midfielder are, even though they have a very specific common goal.

A common thread

For those who participate, it’s nice to have a common thread throughout the event – something recognizable – something that recurs. It could be the staff, something material – or very basic; a point system.

Simple is good

It can be tempting to cram all kinds of entertainment into the program, but it’s easy to overlook travel time, small delays and the hassle of lugging refreshments around the city. Remember that people need time to chat and that it takes time for people to get into the moods that make the day memorable. Better to do one thing completely than to do a lot of things halfway. You need to look back on the day and remember the good times – and these may well be overshadowed by less good experiences.

Don’t underestimate what a hot cup of coffee can do on a barren October day, or how good an ice cold hand berry tastes in the August afternoon sun. It’s also appreciated when there’s a goodie bag for the bus ride, and of course that you’re full when you’ve eaten. Danes in particular find it easier to talk to each other when it happens while enjoying a drink – and it doesn’t matter if it tastes good either…

Whether we organize cooking competitions or historical treasure hunts in the middle of the city, HUMANIC always makes sure that our guests are offered something good to drink and eat. We have partnerships with good restaurants in major cities throughout Denmark, so you are guaranteed good service and delicious food. But if you have to do it yourself, you come with a barrel of ice, some canned beer, and various snacks.

You also need to have a good time yourself

It’s important that you feel like a unit when you’re out enjoying yourself with your colleagues. And at HUMANIC, we always recommend that the people who contact us also participate. It creates a sense of togetherness, and everyone can lower their shoulders when you’re all in the same boat.

If one person is in charge of all the responsibility and logistics, farting around to make sure everyone has a good time, neither that person nor their colleagues can relax properly. So if you organize yourself – without the help of HUMANIC – then the above point “simple is good” is even more important. If the organizer has a good time – the good atmosphere spreads too.

Your time is worth money

Remember that all the time you spend preparing for a staff event is taken away from the time you need to spend on your usual work tasks. It pays off quickly to get help from professionals, be it with activities, food, music, transportation or graphic design. It’s like building a kitchen. It may seem easy when the craftsmen are at it, but it takes a disproportionate amount of time if you do it yourself. Your time is valuable. At work and probably at home too. So use it wisely.
