How to get the most out of a day of team building

Team building can be much more than just a fun activity.
When planned correctly, team building and team activities can strengthen collaboration, community and engagement in the organization – while contributing to learning, reflection and development.

Here are some of the most important considerations when planning a day of team building.

1. What is the purpose of team building?

Before choosing activities, you should ask yourself:

  • Do you want the day to be social and shaking?

  • Do you want participants to gain new learning or insights?

  • Should you work on strategy, culture or collaboration?

Social team building is great for strengthening relationships and creating the “social glue” in the organization.

However, if the goal is team development, the activities should also provide participants with reflection, learning and concrete perspectives to take home.

That’s why it’s important to clarify your needs with your event agency or team building consultant so that the day’s program matches your goals.

2. Should you mix teams – or work in existing teams?

The composition of teams can make a big difference.

When employees from different departments work together, it’s empowering:

  • Community across the organization

  • understanding each other’s roles

  • The feeling of being part of something bigger

Other times, it makes sense to bring together teams that work closely on a daily basis, especially if the purpose is to improve collaboration or solve existing challenges.

3. Competition or community?

Some team activities are about solving a common task as an organization, with everyone working towards the same goal.

Other activities create energy through friendly competition between smaller teams.

Both can be valuable – the important thing is that the format supports your purpose for the day.

4. Teambuilding as part of a bigger day

Teambuilding is often part of a larger program, e.g:

  • a conference

  • a seminar

  • and kick-off

  • A company party

  • An after-work activity

The energy and atmosphere created by a good team activity can set the tone for the rest of the day or evening. Therefore, activities should be planned in conjunction with the rest of the program.

5. Location and setting for team activities

Should the activities take place:

  • In your own home?

  • At an external location?

  • in nature?

  • In a hotel or conference center?

The physical environment has a big impact on which team building activities work best. Catering, logistics and the program also play a role in planning.

An experienced B2B event agency can help you find the right solution.

6. Indoor or outdoor team activity?

Outdoor team building often provides a special energy – especially after a long day of meetings.

It doesn’t have to be perfect weather. If participants are informed in advance, outdoor team activities in Denmark work most of the year.

But sometimes schedules are tight, or the setting requires indoor activities – and of course the concept needs to be adapted.

7. Budget

Budget is a natural part of planning.

A good advice is to involve your event agency early in the process. Once we know the budget framework, we can advise on:

  • the best concept

  • the greatest effect

  • The best experience for participants

Our goal is not to squeeze the budget – but to create the most value for your investment.

8. High season and low season for team building

Teambuilding in Denmark – like many other industries – has periods of high demand.

If you have flexibility in the date, off-season activities can often provide:

  • Better accessibility

  • More flexibility

  • More experience for your money

9. Involve your event agency early

The earlier you get in touch, the better we can help you.

Once we know your ideas, goals and framework, we can put together a program with the right team activities, locations and experiences.

10. Plan follow-up on teambuilding AFTER the day

One of the biggest mistakes companies make is that team building becomes a great experience on the day – but with no impact or significant value afterwards.

If the experience is to create real value in the organization, it’s important to capture it – and remember it.

Has it been teambuilding with professional content or “substance” can for example be by

  • Have a short reflection in the team the next day about what you learned, what you remember best and what you can use – or where your experience may have surprised you compared to each other.

If it was “just” a fun day of team activities and celebration, you can reinforce the value by

  • Make sure photos, anecdotes and maybe an extra activity during the week are shared to tie in with the day.

Even a short follow-up or wrap-up can help turn a team activity into better collaboration and stronger relationships within the organization. So set aside time in the week ahead for this.

Remember: When team building is tied to daily practice, either socially or professionally, it becomes not just an experience – but an investment in team development and cohesion.

Denmark’s best and largest supplier

Since 2004, we have organized thousands of activities across the country for companies large and small. Today, we have developed a number of different concepts ourselves, covering cooking competitions, digital treasure hunts, escapegames and even exercises where several 100 meter long storm p machines are built. What they all have in common is that they are 100% guaranteed to entertain, challenge and develop you. Over time, our specialty has become tailoring unique experiences for companies that want something no one has seen before. We work with the customer to come up with a concept that fits your energy level, values and personalities. We are passionate about creating the best experience for the entire company, so that everyone in the group feels challenged at their own level. Over the years, we have refined the ability of our product to meet everyone’s needs. We can customize your day the way you want it and can easily add either a dinner or a company party to the day. We are based in Copenhagen, but cover the whole country.

Indoor or outdoor activities?

We offer both outdoor and indoor experiences, and if you prefer indoors, it is possible to use one of our own unique venues in Copenhagen or be in your own space. Among our outdoor shaking events, chain reaction is especially popular. But also our gastronomic teambuilding where cooking is the theme is in demand in e.g. Wildlife Cooking or Team Masterchefs.

Teambuilding in Copenhagen, Odense or Aarhus?

If you’re in the bigger cities, we have regular team building concepts in Copenhagen, Odense, Aarhus and Aalborg. Our City Challenge in Aarhus is a good example of how a trip to the city center can be a shaking and fun team activity.

Collaboration and well-being in the workplace

Every company wants to get better at working together across the organization. A rousing positive experience is one of the best tools for motivating and engaging your employees.

Many companies are now using such get-togethers as a way to create a better working environment and strengthen the unity between employees. A high level of job satisfaction and a good working environment is extremely important and has been proven to have a direct impact on productivity. In addition, happy employees have fewer sick days and less risk of developing stress. Not that we’re saying that an event with HUMANIC solves everything, but it’s a good step towards creating a close workplace. Quite simply a coveted employee benefit. Many people spend over half of their waking hours at their workplace, and for many, our colleagues are the people we see the most. That’s why it’s important to focus on well-being in the workplace, for the team and for the individual. HUMANIC offers health services that help you and your employees to thrive physically in your work environment. And social events can contribute to mental health in the workplace.

What is team building?

The term is used today for all kinds of services. That’s why it can be a little difficult to pinpoint exactly what type of experience you’re looking for. In general, keep in mind that trying to push people’s boundaries a little bit and put them in some unfamiliar situations without making anyone feel uncomfortable can often be more beneficial for teamwork. In general, teambuilding can be defined as something where a group or team focuses on working together and using individual skills to solve a given task. Cambridge Dictornary defines it as: “the process of encouraging members of a group to work well together, for example by having them take part in activities or games”

ESG and CSR with team building

Many companies struggle to take ownership of ESG initiatives from the strategy table to the employees in practice. This is where team building can help. We have developed The Sustainability Game, which not only gives you a fun and engaging day, but also “massages” aha experiences and the sustainability theme into the skin of the employee.
